Study in Germany

Housing

A very important aspect of studying in a new city is finding a place to stay. Some people like busy areas, some like it nice and quiet. Some like to live with others, some do not. Take your time to find the place you want, or, if you do not care for the hassle, just ask the university for a place to stay. You will usually end up living with a bunch of international students from around the globe.

Dorm

The rooms are quite small, hence the reason why these are the cheapest rooms you can find. Meanwhile there are some student houses that have rooms and offers for couples. The Studentenwerk have some information about the addresses and the admission procedures of these residences.

Flat Share

The Wohngemeinschaften (WG i.e Flatshare) offer many advantages: You can meet new people easily, share household costs and it is possible to rent a nice and affordable flat. There is no real problem to vacate the accommodation within the rental period as long as some form of notice is given.

Of course, this way of living has some inconveniences too: For instance if you and your roommates have a different understanding of what cleanliness is, or if your daily life's clashes, it is possible that this may cause conflicts. But if you find someone you really want to live with, there is nothing better.

Flat

With your own flat you will be allowed to do whatever you want, without having to adapt your way of life to anyone. Furthermore you won´t be disturbed and you won't disturb anyone if you want to experience the German nightlife. But you alone will cover the cost of all the bills and you will have to organize everything alone.

Newspapers and Notice boards in the universities

There are accommodation offers in local and regional newspapers and online sites. But it is also possible to find adverts at universities e.g on the notice boards Schwarzen Brettern. If you come alone, the WG´s (shared Flat) are a good possibility to meet new people.

Shared flat's central, University Halls, Estate Agent

In most of the university cities in Germany there are shared flats centrals. They become a provision and in exchange they rent you a shared flat. Also University Halls usually have flats to rent. Those who prefer to look for a flat through an estate agent will have to pay on average a two months rent deposit. That is a lot of money for those who only want to stay for a little while in Germany. If there are no more alternatives the Estate agent should be a member of one of these two associations: Ring Deutscher Makler (RDM) or Verband Deutscher Makler (VDM).

Facts you should pay attention to before signing a rental agreement

  • Read the whole contract. If there is something you are unclear about you can contact the legal advice of the AStA.
  • Clear the amount of money you'll pay: Usually the contractor asks for a deposit equivalent to two or three months of rent. When you move out he will give you the money back (Upon inspection of the flat after vacating).
  • Make an inventory of the items in the flat and pass a copy of this onto the landlord.
  • Before moving in you should read the water-, electricity-, and heating meters and advise the current provider.
  • Register your new address in the registration Office (Buergaramt) in a period of one or two weeks of moving in.
  • Pay attention to the cancellation period. In case you want to leave the flat before the end of the agreement you´ll have to communicate it in a period of time before you leave (usually three months) if you don´t want to pay a fine (twice a rent).
