History

Even though their reputation speaks otherwise, it was the Germans that invented romanticism. Many eminent 18th and 17th century schools of thought have their roots in Germany, as do the horrors of the holocaust during the second world war. Light and shadow lay closely together on Germany's pillow of history. Quite a few meaningful technical accomplishments were achieved by German scientists. At the same time, many things that appear typically German actually come from elsewhere: Football blew over from England, beer was invented by the Sumerians 4000 B.C., and Döner, Falafel and Shawarma - although by now fully integrated into German society - is from the Middle East. What you most certainly will notice is Germany's federal, decentralized structure. Laws and policies for higher education institutions vary notably across Germany's 16 states; rules and regulations in one ‘Bundesland', might be very different in the next! Tuition fees are a good example: some German states want to introduce tuition fees as high as €500 per semester while other states currently have no ambition to do this.
