Description courte

The Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin was founded in 1950 under the name German Academy of Music. Situated in the centre of Berlin on Gendarmenmarkt and in the New Marstall on the Schloßplatz, integrated into the diverse cultural landscape, around 600 musicians study here. A large number of international students – about 50 per cent – and numerous connections with other academies throughout the world provide a unique international atmosphere. Courses on offer include singing/music theatre, opera directing, strings, harp, wind instruments, percussion, conducting, piano accompaniment, piano, composition/harmony, academic subjects as well as jazz at the Jazz Institute Berlin, run jointly with the University of the Arts. The Academy boasts a symphony orchestra, a chamber orchestra, a chorus, a studio orchestra, a symphonic wind orchestra, the Eisler Brass ensemble, the ECHO New Music Ensemble and numerous chamber music formations. Internationally renowned artists such as Willy Decker, David Geringas, Gidon Kremer, Hanspeter Kyburz, Marie Luise Neunecker, Thomas Quasthoff, Julia Varady, Antje Weithaas and Tabea Zimmermann-Sloane guarantee a high teaching standard. In orchestral workshops and masterclasses students have the opportunity to work with such famed artists as Midori, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Seiji Ozawa, Thomas Quasthoff, Sir Simon Rattle, and Christian Thielemann. An important aspect is the practice-oriented nature of the training, which is achieved through some 400 public performances each year and through close connections with top orchestras and opera houses, e.g. intensive cooperation exists with the Konzerthaus Berlin and the Berlin Philharmonic Foundation. The last few years have seen the founding of, in cooperation with the University of the Arts, the Kurt Singer Institute for Musicians’ Health, the Institute of New Music and the Jazz Institute Berlin. These institutions are a mark of the Academy’s comprehensive education profile.
